Friday

On leaves and stems...

The best part about Plant Science is being able to look through a microscope and see what you are learning first hand. Why is a slide so much more amazing than the almost identical photo in a textbook? I have way too much fun, in class. The reason I love to teach is to see one person "get it." Becky McCann is having much success with me. I finally understand and remember, for the moment, the parts of a flower, which went over my head in Master Gardener class. I just want to come home and show the Rapplings everything. Really, would you want to listen to your mom talk about plants again? So here's my post so that Kate will actually "listen to me." Pictures speak a thousand words, right?
I won't bore you with all the details. This is what I was able to see in class on Friday.
Why would this information be important? Learning how plants grow and transport food will ultimately help me understand each plants needs, what diseases they are effected by, etc., etc., etc. I'll bet you've even experimented with this whole vascular bundle science stuff....
I used to do this "experiment" with Aunt Pearl and Uncle Clyde. Although they weren't actually my Aunt and Uncle, just the coolest elderly neighbors my parents lived by on the East Side. They would have me cut lots and lots of Queen Anne's lace and fill ball jars with water, then let me play with the food coloring. Sweet summer memories, little me thinking that they knew magical things. Food coloring spreading through the water and up into the flowers = magic. Magical experiences for children make life so much sweeter. First you need white flowers, vases, water, and food coloring. Mix food coloring into the water each vase can be a new color. Cut off the end of each stem under water to prevent air from entering the stem. Put each flower into a vase and wait for the flower to absorb the water.
Then you wait as the flower gives off water through it's petals it will need to replace it with water from the vase. Tada! Beautiful hand dyed flowers.
If you have a hypodermic needle and some dye and way to much time on your hands to experiment you can try this. Me, I'm sticking with food coloring and Queen Anne's Lace. Tomorrow, I'll be going to buy some white flowers to let the girls experiment at home. These photos aren't mine but belong to this blog. Thanks for all of her hard work and beautiful photos.
Link to the post with these hypodermically created blooms. I'll be posting the Rapplings creations soon. Until then have fun playing with food coloring.

Poptarts and a squirrel...

Do you like Pop Tarts? This is a loaded question. Go ahead ask a couple of people. The giving of opinions can become quite loud when the childhood favorite is maligned. I've bought them for the girls in the past but they were way tooooo sweet for me. Well I was converted by the sassy combination of brown sugar, cinnamon and frosting last year. So while they aren't really the best breakfast for you they'll do in a pinch. I did recently laugh out loud in while in Giant Eagle and I saw the "made with whole grains" logo on the side of the box. Really are they trying to make me feel like a better mother by loading the girls sugary goodness with vitamins? Sugary goodness should just be sugary goodness. So I left the whole grain box behind.

Okay so why the pop tart discussion? Well on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning I take the girls to the Botanicals....they either get doughnuts or Pop Tarts. Today we had Pop Tarts. The girls will get into and out of the van the whole time we're there. I went to load in my tools before we left. When I actually screamed a girly scream. There was a squirrel looking back at me from underneath the rear seat of my van. Apparently my little squirrel friend likes Pop Tarts. So I talked to him and he actually came when I called him out of the car. You know me..."Hey little buddy...Really you want to come out of the car....Really.....Come on little buddy.....out out out...That's a good little buddy." When I was sure he and his treasure which I threw across the grass were gone. I slammed the door. Me and squirrels I tell you. A squirrel in the van, chasing guests out of my studio, three crazed squirrel chasing girls, I can never have enough squirrels.
Included below are a few of my favorite's things,
besides a nutritionally well balanced squirrel, that I found in nature today.
Morning Glory by the front fence....
forgot about the Carpenter bees!
Really, really need to kill the bees tomorrow. Jewelweed flower.... I love my weeds!
New find at the Pioneer Garden. Matt Ross showed me this amazing little flower under all the squash vines(which I will be cutting back on Thursday.) You'll never guess what it is. Okra...yeah amazing little creation isn't it?

Friday

Miniature happiness...

This sweet rosebush may be tiny but it produces these beautiful soft pink blooms all summer long. Thought I'd share.

Wednesday

My littlest gardener...

Caught Paige and Sydney dead heading the grape hyacinths. I mentioned that I needed to do this in passing a few days before. They went to work on their own. Scissors are always available in my gardening bucket. Sydney got frustrated with sharing her job and went to the car. Paige stayed the course. Luckily I saw her and was able to supervise before things got out of hand. Obviously they listened and thought they'd help me out.

Monday

Graham Thomas...

That's the name of this rose. My favorite in my garden... Yes I did take this one too!

Thursday

Pretty in pink...

Miss Candace gave these tulips to Sydney and Kate during their last show.
Finally I'm postin me some pictures to share.

Check out the little grains of pollen.
These petals mesmerized me...I've always wanted to be able to paint like that.

I love how the petals curve gracefully around the center.
Funny note: Candace brought two bouquets for the two little actresses. When Paige saw them she said, "Where's mine?" Candace handled the whole question like a pro. When Paige wasn't looking, she carefully broke off one of the little buds and gave it to Miss Paige. Viola!!! Major disaster diverted. Miss Candace you ROCK! She talked about her tulip for a week. It was proudly displayed with her sisters flowers because, in Paige's words, "I got some too!!!"

Tuesday

Spring?

Pinwheel mix

Cut and Come Again Mix
I love gardening. I haven't always had time to garden as much as I like but hopefully this year. I am currently planning my cutting garden. This time I will grow plants that I've had previous experience with. My favorite sucessful annuals(this mean they grow from seed every year) Cleome, Cosmos, Tall Snapdragons, and Zinnias. Here are a few pictures to fill your day with a little more spring. ~ Susan
